Bridging Stories: How Technology Enhances Charity

If a picture speaks a thousand words, then a video can tell multiple stories. Or, in the case of the video we created for our clients, two stories in particular. The story of a charity and the story of the technology that is helping that charity better achieve positive change.

The charity is Ronald McDonald House Charities. This remarkable not-for-profit organisation provides invaluable services and support for children diagnosed with a serious illness and their families. Their houses keep families close and comfortable during times of intense emotional stress, so that no one needs to feel alone or distant while a child is receiving essential healthcare services.

The technology comes from solutions provider OPC who, alongside valuable assistance from Crayon and Microsoft Solutions, are strengthening RMHC Canberra house’s IT infrastructure. By bringing their cloud services up to modern standards, the charity’s technology is now better positioned to improve efficiencies, boost staff confidence, and securely protect sensitive patient information.

This is where we got involved. PN Digital was commissioned to create a video project that showcases the impact of both of these stories. To begin this project, we had a pre-production meeting in Melbourne, laying down the groundwork for the shoot in Canberra. Despite the distance, we knew we could effectively manage this project remotely without compromising on the quality of the product.

We worked with our project manager Arek Rainczuk to tap into his extensive network of videographers around Australia and collaborated with a talented professional in Canberra to capture all of the footage. Our team then storyboarded the video, before beginning the production with one foot in Melbourne and one foot in Canberra.

Shooting the video on-site in Canberra meant that we had to be mindful of patient space and privacy. Any interruptions to the production were entirely understandable, as our job was to stay in the background as much as possible to not get in the way of the incredible work taking place there.

This policy of patient privacy carried over to the editing process. We were careful to edit out any background people who had not consented to their inclusion or any details in the footage – such as writing on a whiteboard – that wouldn’t be appropriate for the final video. After putting together a rough edit, we then smoothed the video out with music, slow motion, and other effects.

The final video showcases both Ronald McDonald House Charities’ impact on the community and how OPC – alongside Crayon and Microsoft – have strengthened the IT infrastructure for the Canberra house. Arek did a terrific job coordinating this endeavour remotely in Melbourne, demonstrating PN Digital’s ability to create meaningful content no matter where our clients are based.
